Sodwana’s Flashiest Little Show-Off

On a recent dive by our diving partner Adventure Mania to Sodwana Bay’s caves and overhangs, they had the pleasure of bumping into one of the reef’s best-dressed residents: the Threadfin Butterflyfish (Chaetodon auriga).
There are plenty of fish in the sea, as the old saying goes—but some really know how to dress for the occasion. On a recent dive by our diving partner Adventure Mania to Sodwana Bay’s caves and overhangs, they had the pleasure of bumping into one of the reef’s best-dressed residents: the Threadfin Butterflyfish (Chaetodon auriga).
Think of it as the haute couture model of the underwater world—sleek, striking and forever photo-ready. With its bright yellow tail, delicate black eye-stripe (the fishy version of oversized sunglasses) and that long trailing filament extending from its dorsal fin like a flourish of ribbon, the Threadfin Butterflyfish is pure glamour on the go.
But don’t let the stylish appearance fool you. This little beauty isn’t just about looks—it’s also something of a cave explorer. The divers spotted it flitting nonchalantly through the shadowy arches and overhangs, pausing just long enough to give them the full red-carpet treatment before darting away to nibble on coral polyps. Clearly, it knows its angles.
Unlike its more bashful reef neighbours, the Butterflyfish seems to rather enjoy the attention. In fact, it has the uncanny ability to appear exactly when your camera battery is gasping its last breath, as if to say, ‘Darling, you simply must capture this moment.’
Of course, it’s not all strut and no substance. Threadfin Butterflyfish play an important role on the reef, helping to keep coral communities balanced and reminding us that Sodwana Bay is home to one of the richest underwater ecosystems in the world. They’re living proof that function and fashion can, in fact, coexist beautifully.
So, if you’re joining Adventure Mania for a dive at Sodwana Bay Lodge, keep your eyes peeled around the caves and ledges. Adventure colour, and a touch of cheeky glamour await. And if you do happen to cross paths with the Threadfin Butterflyfish, just remember: no selfies without its consent.
